IROAD Blackbox Product Photography
Shooting with Pure Improvisation
The IROAD blackbox shoot was carried out without any pre-planned concepts. The client simply delivered the products without any additional comments, leaving all creative direction entirely in my hands. While the freedom of improvisation was enjoyable, the challenge quickly emerged as the number of product variations and required concepts grew. Without additional resources for props or set design, the process demanded both spontaneity and focus to maintain quality across each shot.
The Appeal of Electronics and a New Perspective on Blackboxes
As a photographer, I find electronics especially compelling. They combine multiple textures and forms within a single object, reacting vividly to changes in light direction, intensity, and angle. When I first received the IROAD blackbox, I was surprised by its sleek design. Unlike the typical, rather plain shape of most blackboxes, this one carried a refined aesthetic that sparked a sense of attachment and creative drive during the shoot.
From Functional Metaphors to Mood-Driven Imagery
At the beginning, I attempted to reflect the product’s functions through metaphoric visuals, but the results felt outdated and diminished the sophistication of the images. I quickly abandoned that approach and decided instead to focus on mood-driven photography. In a fast-consumption environment, creating images that leave a striking impression is far more important. Rather than forcing symbolic meaning, I aimed to capture photos that make viewers simply think, “This looks great,” even if just for a fleeting moment
Colored Lighting Meets Black Design
One advantage of the IROAD blackbox lineup was its uniform black color. Normally, using colored gels might distort a product’s natural color, but here it became a creative opportunity. The black surface absorbed and reflected colored light beautifully, allowing the photos to adopt a modern and stylish feel. The final results were not just product documentation but images with visual presence—photographs that could be remembered for their atmosphere as much as for the product itself
