Unexpected Freedom in the Humedical Serum Shoot
This photoshoot for Humedical’s Serum was, in many ways, an unusual experience. Normally, client involvement is a crucial part of the process—whether through on-site feedback or online approvals. However, this time there were none of those procedures. I only received a brief outline: a few concept directions and the number of shots required. There was no pre-shoot meeting, no online confirmation, and no on-site supervision. Until the morning of the shoot, I wasn’t entirely sure whether the project would even proceed. Strangely enough, that uncertainty gave me a sense of freedom. With no strict schedule, immediate feedback, or rigid constraints, the set felt like an open field for exploration.
Building a Forest Inside the Studio
One of the main highlights was recreating a forest inside the studio. People often assume that photographing with a forest background requires going outdoors. In reality, for small-scale product shoots, building a miniature forest indoors is far more effective. It allows complete control over lighting, eliminates environmental unpredictability, and saves the time and effort of moving equipment to a location. Of course, it comes with the burden of hauling plants, soil, and cleaning up afterwards. Yet, when the set finally came together, the satisfaction outweighed the effort
Balancing Experimentation and Product Identity
The freedom also allowed me to experiment with multiple visual approaches. We created lush, natural scenes with the forest setup, and tried laboratory-inspired arrangements to bring a sense of scientific precision. At the same time, I could prioritize what worked and skip what didn’t. Some ideas felt misaligned with the product’s identity, so I deliberately minimized time on them, instead focusing on scenes that would truly highlight the Serum. That kind of selective decision-making was only possible because there was no client monitoring the process in real time.
A Day of Creative Autonomy and Fulfillment
By the end of the day, I had captured a wide variety of images that felt both complete and rewarding. Although I missed the immediate reactions of the client, the shoot left me with a deep sense of fulfillment. It was a day of creative autonomy—an opportunity to immerse myself fully in the act of photography, guided purely by my own judgment. This project became a reminder of how liberating it can be to create without constraints, and how meaningful it is to see the results born entirely out of one’s own perspective.
